Holistic Approach to Eczema

What Is Eczema?

Eczema, also known as atopic dermatitis, is a chronic inflammatory skin condition characterized by dry, itchy, red, and inflamed patches of skin. It can occur in individuals of any age, but it is particularly common in children. Eczema tends to flare up periodically and can vary in severity from mild to severe.

From a naturopathic perspective, eczema is viewed as a manifestation of imbalance within the body, often stemming from a combination of genetic predisposition, immune dysregulation, and environmental factors. Therefore, it is important to address the root causes of eczema rather than merely treating symptoms.

My Journey Overcoming Eczema with a Naturopathic Approach

I experienced my first eczema flare-up during my college years, and it was tough. It covered my hands, legs, and stomach, making daily life a struggle. I sought help from a dermatologist who prescribed steroid cream, but it only made things worse.

Looking back, I realize stress, a poor diet (Standard American Diet), and bad sleep habits were major triggers for my eczema. It's common for these factors to contribute to eczema flare-ups. I consider myself lucky to have learned how to manage my eczema naturally and now I'm passionate about helping others who suffer from it.

What Causes Eczema?

  1. Eczema results from a mix of genetic factors and environmental triggers that disrupt the skin barrier and activate the immune system.

  2. Genetic factors, like the FLG gene, weaken the skin barrier, while imbalances in the gut microbiome contribute to inflammation.

  3. Allergies, particularly to substances like dust mites and certain foods, exacerbate eczema by triggering abnormal immune responses, leading to inflammation and rashes.

Functional Labs for Eczema

  1. Organic Acid Test: urine test to assess for nutritional deficiencies, indicators of detoxification and macronutrient breakdown

  2. Comprehensive Stool Exam: assesses biomarkers to identify patterns of intestinal dysbiosis, inflammation, and permeability, which can impact the function of both the gut and skin barrier.

  3. Food Sensitivity Testing: helps confirm the presence of food sensitivities so that we can do a therapeutic elimination diet to alleviate immune hyperactivity and promote healing in the intestines.

Holistic Approach To Eczema

  1. Detailed Nutrition Plan: In my approach to treating eczema holistically, I begin by creating a tailored nutrition plan for my patients. Together, we identify and eliminate potential food triggers while emphasizing the consumption of whole, nutrient-rich foods. By nourishing the body with essential vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, our goal is to support internal healing and improve the external symptoms of eczema.

  2. Supplement/Herbal Recommendations: In addition to dietary changes, I incorporate supplements and herbal remedies to enhance your body's natural healing mechanisms. Supplements that would help boost the immune system and reduce inflammation, key factors in managing eczema flare-ups. I also use herbal remedies that are anti-inflammatory and have soothing effects on the skin. Additionally, detoxifying supplements or herbs aid in the elimination of toxins from the body, further supporting eczema healing.

  3. Lifestyle Changes: Recognizing the profound impact of lifestyle factors on eczema, I guide my patients in making necessary changes. We work together to manage stress, which can help reduce cortisol levels and alleviate eczema symptoms. Additionally, we identify and minimize exposure to environmental triggers, prioritize quality sleep, and encourage regular exercise to regulate the immune system and promote skin health.
